I'm pretty sure I can say (without disrespecting your mother in the slightest) that you will be moving into the cleanest house you have ever lived in, or at least that started off the cleanest. I mean, really, who would clean the tops of each pipe in the basement and Lysol ALL surfaces unless absolutely necessary? :)

I'd like to turn the question back on you, Chris. What are the Internet's implications on the Church as body? Can the Internet facilitate the Church as Body? Or is it a parody of the Church as body? Or something third possibility?

Yeah, I think the trend is broader than the 1950s in some ways: might even go back to the America Tract Society, which was the evangelical (anachronistically termed) response to the rise of mass literacy.

So that makes some sense to me: I'll have to check out the book

Chris,
Have you read the book by Lisa Shaver, Beyond the Pulpit? I think the way that she looks at the rhetoric of the antebellum religious press in the Methodist church is very similar to what you are talking about with Evangelicals. It might be worth a read (less than 200 pages).

Hey man! Good to hear ya.

Yeah, Fitch can sometimes come off a little bit cranky and likes to push buttons sometimes. :) But you gotta respect him. If you read his post, you notice he refers directly to the links you give above: Trevor Wax and Michael Horton among them. And he has some precedent for feeling a little touchy on the issue: some of the "back to the gospel" bloggers are coming from a strong Reformed position and often define the gospel including double-predestination and atonement as *only forensic penal substitution--sorta subtly implying that lots of other gospel-loving protestants really don't get the gospel. Hardly everyone, but it's been a thing.

BUT that's not really a bone I'm trying to pick. :)

Although Scot really does have in mind partly this crowd. I think it's fair to anticipate somewhat critical response at least from some quarters. We're getting back into the "New Perspective on Paul" idea too here, which has Piper and NT Wright writing pretty intense books back and forth. Scot's on the NT Wright side (Jimmy Dunn, actually), so again, sorta fair to anticipate some criticism from the Gospel Coalition.

But Scot isn't an antagonistic writer, and I read the book thinking: boy, this hopefully will continue to be a good conversation anchor.

Have you read it?

Hey Chris!
I've been following your posts on this with interest. I'll be curious to see you continued 'review' as your posts on John Dyer's book were phenomenal.

One note. In your original post you noted that Fitch was wondering why no reviews from TGC. I do think his post title was unfortunate as it was intentionally antagonistic, and I think inappropriate as I don't anticipate such a critical response. I'm not sure why he finds/seeks such antagonism?

Anyway, I wanted to pass on a few links where it was indeed reviewed/referenced there:
http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/tgc/2011/11/01/what-god-has-joined-together-the-story-and-salvation-gospel/?comments#comments
http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/justintaylor/2011/09/14/the-king-jesus-gospel/
http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/justintaylor/2011/10/13/are-you-a-soterian-horton-reviews-mcknight/

The reviews seem to consider the book a good one even if not all are in complete agreement. I look forward to seeing yours or Scot's responses.

Antoine - oh, I think I meant something different with "human." Maybe "human-like" is better. I'm not intending to say that smartphones are humans or speaking of something like artificial intelligence/sentience. I'm saying that our interaction and use of them is somewhat "natural" to the condition of being human. It's not robotic or or weird or out-of-character for us to use them. They modify and amplify functions we already to (think, emote, relate, etc).

Interesting. Can a smartphone be sentient without the network? Is the current mode of smartphones too passive/reactive to be sentient?

I'm not going to call it human, because we have not yet seen a smartphone demonstrate reason. I think we'll get to another mode/means/medium of communication before that happens.

That's true on internet stuff. And freedom from prejudice because of the "equalizing factor" (reading lots of awkwardly optimistic articles by feminist theologians in the early 90s).

don't know of any related McLuhan comments. Did you find any quotes?
