Every year, Chicago celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in style.  This year I finally made it down to the river with friends to see the famous plumbers union dye the river green .  Check out my photos:

Presidential Inauguration

Photos and thoughts will have to come later, but we had the kind of day that you couldn’t have made better.  Incredible opportunity and views of Inauguration Day.  For now… on this overhead photo of the Mall, taken pretty early in the day by Geo-Eye , I’ve marked about where we got to watch the swearing in ceremony.

I just spent an hour digging a car out of 1.5 feet of snow, so it’s a relief to come back upstairs and post photos from my sun-drenched vacation! A five day cruise sponsored by one of our GCM network churches—it was the first I’d ever been on. Days at sea were a blast, but from the first port (Progreso, Mexico ) I got to visit on of the seven new wonders of the world—the incredible Mayan ruins of ChiChen Itza.  My only regret: we only were able to spend two hours, meaning I still missed significant portions of the national park. Our second port at Cozumel, an island very near Cancun, was a day relaxing on the beach… I got a sweet tan.  I would definitely enjoy doing this again!

My brain is close to 100% fried from finals week and end of term writing. Here are some birds that were sitting outside my window.

First snow that’s stuck.

Over the Rhine played a private show at North Park University on Wednesday evening, 5 November 2008. They’re one of my favorite bands—an intimate fusion of folk, soul, bluegrass, and jazz set on an Mid-Western landscape.

I still don’t have a good lowlight lens for my digital SLR, so many of these aren’t the greatest shots… but they capture the spirit of Linford, Karin, and their current band (which retained the bass player and insanely good drummer from last year, but added a great slide/electric guitarist). The show, being private, was undersold, and it was a bummer, because most of the audience that did come wasn’t familiar their work. At times, I felt like I was one of only three fans in the whole room, embarrassingly the only one yelling for songs I recognized as they began. I know OtR felt it. At one point, Karin leaned into the mic, smiled, and said “mmm… you guys are so well behaved.” Which, translated from her charm and professionalism meant: “wow, I can’t believe how you’re just sitting there.”

I had that urgent desire to stand up waving my hand like an idiot saying—I’m not with them! Really! I like it! Keep going!

They only played one short encore, which my fellow-fan Tim pointed out, was the shortest he’d ever seen them do.

But regardless, the music was, as usual second to none.
