flooding

Chris Ridgeway | 14 Sep 2008 | 05:21

North Park University is evacuating two of it’s undergraduate dorms that have proximities close the little Chicago river tributary we live on. I’ve never seen it this high. There are homeless undergrads wandering around all over outside. And it’s supposed to keep raining.

burglars and artists | marshall mcluhan 2

Chris Ridgeway | 28 Jun 2008 | 23:11

Our conventional response to all media, namely that it is how they are used that counts, is the numb stance of the technological idiot. For the “content” of a medium is like the juicy piece of meat carried by the burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind.

The effects of technology do not occur at the level of opinions of concepts, but alter sense ratios or patterns of perception steadily and without any resistance. The serious artist is the only person able to encounter technology with impunity, just because he is an expert aware of the changes in sense perception.

this is where I am

Chris Ridgeway | 25 May 2008 | 12:03

I know it looks like someone painted it, but this is sorta the daily view out our front porch.

And I’ve almost been too busy to see it. I think I’ve set a record for me: almost 10 days of not posting! Geesh, even during final exams I threw a few notes up here. But this first “pre-week” of Colorado LT has been 15 hour work-days for me… although it’s felt awesome, being such a change from studying. I’ve gone from being best friends with my laptop computer to meeting about 140 (not making it up) new people in the last week, and trying to remember names! Not doing too badly.

Anyway. More about my summer adventures soon.

reading week

Chris Ridgeway | 10 Mar 2008 | 01:41

I’m taking a few days off. “Reading Week” or “Spring Break” is this week for North Park, and I’m being lower key for a couple days. More posts in the near future.

first day of class

Chris Ridgeway | 28 Aug 2007 | 10:45

Oh Monday. Did I mention that my new life as a grad student includes four straight 8 o’clock-in- the-morning classes each week?

My body is tired (bedtime, what?). My brain is tired (3hrs15mins of classroom time). And I won’t be remembering any more names for approximately two years (seminary chapel, seminary info/activity fair, university bookstore).

Away to the dark, quiet, welcome land of the Sleep.

four pedagogies of theological study

Chris Ridgeway | 23 Aug 2007 | 09:24

Jay Phelan is president of North Park Theological Seminary, and he gave a short address to a still somewhat bleary-eyed room at 9am in the morning. But his topic was the four pedagogies of theological education. Approaching the various disciplines within theological study, we must keep in mind:

  1. Interpretation – we interpret the Text and we interpret the world around us.
  2. Formation – self-awareness is foundational to spiritual formation.
  3. Contextualization – learning to balance rude assertion vs. limp accommodation (here he quoted some Leslie Newbigin).
  4. Performance/Praxis – the church is not simply about what we believe, but what we do.

new bedroom

Chris Ridgeway | 20 Aug 2007 | 00:07

Welp. it’s about 2ft by 4ft, but I think I’ve managed to fit at least some of my old furniture in. No word on where I’ll store the rest. :) I really like the view out the back windows though – big trees, and the water flowing through the small banks of the north branch of the Chicago River.

donald miller quotes

Chris Ridgeway | 16 Jun 2007 | 05:12

Some amusing quotes from Donald Miller at this morning’s big session:

“I’m 1% left brained, meaning 1% of my brain balances my chequebook”

“GK Chesterton wrote, ‘It’s the mathematician that goes mad, not the poet.’
{Laughter, clapping.}
Whoa, I love this audience already! This is usually where they start booing. Quote that at a Reformed conference, and they’re not as friendly… (uh, don’t tell people I said that.)”

“I was out with my friend talking and drinking large cold pints of… coffee. In your part of the country this might be a sin, to have this particular kind of coffee… It’s regional; sin is regional.”

About Me

Chris Ridgeway

Retro-identity idea: define yourself by magazines. Me? Wired. Paste. Atlantic Monthly. Discipleship Journal. Or this: For ten years I've worked as a leadership coach, spiritual director, and free agent missionary with Great Commission Ministries on its mission to reach the next generation--I currently serve as the national Staff Program Manager for GCM, helping train and equip church planters, campus missionaries , and other missional leaders. My area of curiosity is the impact of an information society on Christian theology, especially a doctrine of scripture. Does text messaging modify our view of the Trinity? Oh yeah, and I'm inexcusably addicted to breakfast diners. New home base: Orlando, FL. Home home: Chicago-ish.
